I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend! I went shopping yesterday for the express purpose of buying some Valentine's decorations. For some reason, my stash of Valentine Decor is seriously lacking. I found a few great things which I bought, but decided that I could make some great stuff, too. So...check back in the next day or two for a fun Valentine's Home Decor project that I am working on. In the mean time, I will share a Valentine that I made a while back that I haven't posted here or on SCS. I love using Chipboard, but find that I don't reach for it often. I need to start using my stash better. Anyway, this card uses one of the large SU! chipboard pieces which I mooshed real red craft ink onto, then heat set with Iridescent Ice Embossing Powder. I then added the sentiment stamp from the stamp set Sweet Thing. I colored it with Markers so that some of the words would become more of a focus. I also used the Tres Chic Background stamp, which I totally love.

One of the Valentine's Traditions that we had growing up was that we wouldn't just take a Valentine to a friend, but we would do it by leaving it on the doorstep and then ringing the doorbell and running away. It was a complete surprise. Did anyone else do this, or was I the only one?

I have 5 brothers and one sister, usually 2 days before VD, my Mom would sit us all down at the dining room table and we write our names on all the cards for our class. Then on VD my Mom made cherry jello with whipped creme.

Sometime around Valentine's Day, I always make Red Hot Applesauce...
4 granny smith apples
1/2 c orange juice
1 c whole cranberries
1/4 c sugar
1/4 c brown sugar
3 Tbsp red hot candies
1 tsp vanilla
Peel and core apples. Cut into 1/4 inch dice. Bring OJ to a boil and add apples, cranberries, sugars and red hots. Cook covered for 8 to 10 minutes until cranberries have popped and apples are soft. Blend in vanilla.
So warm and cozy...
Love your card and can't wait to see your home decor projects!! My ds and I always make heart shaped sugar cookies and we ice and decorate them and give them away. Super fun!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful Valentine card, Kelly! I loved taking pink-frosted cupcakes, covered with pink, red, and white sprinkles to my children's school classes at Valentine. Can't do that anymore! It all has to be healthy food! There should be some exceptions, right??
ReplyDeleteThe only one I recall is eating yourself silly with all the chocolate----mom alwasy gave us chocolate of some kind! Oh, now I remember abother....jello jigglers! Heart shaped jello jigglers! Yum!

ReplyDeleteI don't have any Valentine's traditions other than eating the fudge that my grandma always sends. For a few years when I was a little kid I made Valentines for my classmates, but I don't remember ever really enjoying that - I put a lot of effort in and then got teased because I didn't have store-bought cards.

When I was small, My Dad would take my sister and I to Fannymay candies and pick out something for my Mom. We loved to go because they would always have samples for us to try. It was really hard not to tell my Mom what was up.. Now that my Dad has passed, I take my boys to Fannymay to get something for Grandma. The excitement has not changed at all. They have a hard time not letting Grandma know whats up. They can hardly wait until the 14th.

ReplyDeleteIn grade school we used to cover shoeboxes with construction paper and cut-out hearts and anything we could find Valentiney-- I used to LOVE making my box every year. We had mail slots cut into the lid and used them on Valentine's Day as mailboxes in our classrooms.

We don't have Valentine's day traditions, it was always just my Dad's birthday. But with my DD I am going to start making candies for her teachers, sounds like a yummy tradition to me!

Growing up we ALWAYS received a hollow chocolate easter bunny in our baskets along with other candies, but the chocolate bunny was a sure thing. I decided to carry on this tradition with my own DS. To add to this tradition, I always include an Easter book in his basket.

ReplyDeleteValentine's is a big deal around here. Every year, we decorate the house in all kinds of pinks and reds. Hearts everywhere! We have a red themed dinner. All the food and drinks are red. We light red candles in my crystal candlesticks. The kids think it is so special! Then right before dessert, we exchange our Valentine's. The kids usually get some candy and a little gift. After the kids go to bed, DH and I pop in a girlie movie and snuggle on the couch. I *heart* Valentine's day!

One of our traditions when I was younger (very much younger) was that my father would stop at the store after work on Valentine's day and buy each of his kids and my mother a heart shaped box of chocolate candy. Then after dinner we would all sit together and pick at everyone's candy.

Me and my husband don't really have any real traditions. Our first Valntines Day together he went all out and had many surprises, including a limo and special flowers delivered ahead of time to our table at the dinner and a movie. So since then it has been plain. Go out to eat. Nothing super spendy. Thanks Kathy Hering...
ReplyDeleteWe don't really have any Valentine's traditions other than not going to the gym ... when we were first married, we went to the gym on Valentine's Day, and I managed to dislocate my knee in step aerobics class ... the orthopedic surgeon suggested that we try something else on Valentine's Day from here on ... so we never go to the gym on Valentine's Day.

I always love seeing the little valentines they have in stores for kids to take to school. Of course, I would rather make valentines. We like going out to eat and then I make a new "fancy" dessert (as in not or standard cookies or brownies). Love your card!

love the card. TFS. We have a valentine party and each of my daughters invite a friend or two. We have a "fancy" set table, crystal and all, fancy cake and food. Then we do a craft or two.... we also make our invites. Tons of fun!

The only tradition I've ever had for V-day is, my mom always buys me something and now I always buy my 2 boys a little something! I like that idea of leaving your present and running thou, that would be fun.

I always buy my kids a red/or heart themed item and a box of conversation hearts that are waiting for them when they wake up on Valentine's Day. We also, bake a heart shaped cake to enjoy after a wonderful Valentine dinner. Cute card! Thanks for sharing.

When I was little, (ages ago!!), my Mom would buy those conversation hearts and leave them in different places that only I would find them... Now I do that with my two!! They love them!

ReplyDeleteOur daughter Emma died inuetero at 36 weeks the day after Valentines Day (7 years ago) and so I spend part of Valentines Day thinking of her, going through the scrapbook I made for her and thanking God for the fact that my dh and I were able to make it through such a time in our lives to be a healthier couple. Through her death we discovered Jesus and each of us were baptized within 3 months. I refuse to let Valentines Day be a depressing time, revisiting an otherwise hard time in our lives, and instead we spend it reflecting on the way our little girl impacted our lives, she brought Jesus to us and our other 3 children!
i take a picture with my little boys to scrapbook for february pages. i wear pink and they wear red or white. it gives me one chance to scrapbook pink pages in the boys' scrapbooks. :) the pictures turn out better by ourselves with timer than when dad takes the pictures, for some reason. :)

We used to tape a paper bag to our desk in public school, put all our heads down - no peeking, and 1 by 1 we could go around and put Valentines in whichever persons bag you wanted to or liked. They were the fun rip apart kind of many years ago, we'd write who they were too and who from.
